Pierce Enforcer Hazmat Vehicles Selected to Support Oregon Hazmat Teams

Pierce Manufacturing has delivered two Pierce® Enforcer® HazMat vehicles to serve with Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal’s (OSFM) statewide Regional Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Teams System, which is charged with responding to hazardous materials emergency incidents that exceed the resources and capabilities of local jurisdictions.  The vehicle replacement program includes a 10-year contract between OSFM and Pierce for procurement of Pierce Enforcer apparatus.

APPLETON, WI—Pierce Manufacturing Inc. has delivered two Pierce® Enforcer® hazmat vehicles to serve with the Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal’s (OSFM) statewide Regional Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Teams System. This agency is charged with responding to hazmat incidents that exceed the resources and capabilities of local jurisdictions. The vehicle replacement program includes a 10-year contract between the OSFM and Pierce for the procurement of Pierce Enforcer fire apparatus.

“The collaboration between the local area fire departments and the Oregon Office of the State Fire Marshal represents leadership on a national level in its approach to a uniform and comprehensive hazardous materials emergency response system,” says Jim Johnson, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president of the Fire & Emergency segment and Pierce Manufacturing. “Pierce is proud to be selected to supply these vital apparatus to support this important mission.”

“Our mission is to respond to any hazardous materials incident, anywhere in the state, within two hours. These new Pierce vehicles are going to be a phenomenal new resource for our teams,” says Kyle Romey, member of the Albany (OR) Fire Department and the equipment committee coordinator for the Regional Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Teams System. “The new vehicles are going to be more user-friendly, safer to drive, and far more maneuverable. Those are all huge advantages. They’re going to be a fantastic addition to our teams and their mission.”

In 1989, the Oregon Legislature authorized the OSFM to establish a statewide Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Teams System. Thirteen teams are strategically located statewide to provide swift response to hazmat ncidents. To date, Oregon is one of the few states able to establish and maintain a program of this type.

Oregon’s regional response system is based on partnerships with local governments, the OSFM, and industry wherein resources are shared to create a program that is both economical and successful. The OSFM contracts with local area fire departments to provide regional hazmat emergency response teams and services. Hazmat teams work with and train first responders and industry to assure Oregon communities are prepared to respond to hazmat incidents and create safer communities.

Each Pierce Enforcer vehicle features a 70-inch extended-length cab with a 24-inch raised roof (a four-door configuration with a rear wall walk-through), and seating for up to 10 team members. The vehicles

Solvang (CA) to Enlarge Fire Station for Fire Apparatus

The plan to add a new single-chassis fire truck moved forward Monday when the Solvang City Council decided to draw up plans to slightly modify its existing fire station to accommodate the size of the new vehicle. The building modification will extend the fire station by about 10 feet to the rear and add approximately 240-square-feet to the building's size.

The architectural design work is estimated to cost $34,000, with the construction estimated at $65,000. It is not yet known how much demolition will cost, which the city will also pay for.

The largest cost of the project is the $1.6 million fire truck, which will be paid for by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.

"There's an agreement between the County of Santa Barbara and its fire department and the tribe to purchase a new ladder truck as mitigation for the casino expansion project for an amount not to exceed $1.6 million," said Sam Cohen, government and legal specialist for the tribe.

While the county's Fire Station No. 32, in Santa Ynez, is typically the tribe's first responder, the county's fire chief thought the new fire truck would be better placed in the neighboring Fire Station 30 in Solvang, Cohen said.

Retired Veteran Vows to Protect North Carolina Fire Station During Calls

Woody Williams is not playing around when it comes to his neighborhood fire station. He will be there to protect the men and women who work there.

Bad guys, beware. Woody Williams is not playing around when it comes to his neighborhood fire station. He will be there to protect the men and women who work there.

A photo of Williams in his plaid jacket and pajama pants has gone viral after he went out to his local fire station to keep an eye on the place while firefighters were out on a call.

This comes after firefighters from multiple agencies across the Carolinas have had their personal vehicles hit by burglars while they were out on fire calls.

"Since they had all the bad press about the burglar breaking into the firefighters' cars in other areas, I said 'Well, as an old veteran, I can come over here and keep an eye on this place'," Williams told WBTV Monday. "When I hear them go out, I just say 'Well, I'll come over here and keep an eye on things'."
