‘Gone in 30 Seconds’ – Shingle Springs (CA) Loses Two Rigs in Wildfire at Six Rivers National Forest

The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Tribal Fire Department lost two rigs when fire burning at Six Rivers National Forest overran the vehicles Monday.

The crew from El Dorado County had parked the rigs what they thought was a safe distance from the fire, but a shift brough flames racing up a hill and it consumed the vehicles in less than 30 seconds, KCRA reports.

Fire was so hot, one piece of apparatus was completely incinerated. The crew lost all the gear they had brought, including firefighting tools, tents, clothing and food. In total, the loss was valued at over $1 million, KCRA reported.

No one was injured in the incident, and the 19 firefighters were able to find shelter with the Red Cross. The Six Rivers Lightning Complex fire has burned 7,000 acres.

The new apparatus will replace units put in service in 1983, according to the news station.

Miami Township Clermont County (OH) Takes Delivery of E-ONE HR100 Aerial

By Bill Adkins

When Miami Township Clermont County (OH) decided to replace their 2002 rear-mount tower ladder, they agreed to look for something that was maneuverable for smaller subdivisions but still maintained the 100-foot reach. They wanted something with 500 gallons of water that still had the ability to store the much-needed equipment and provided options for different hose deployment needs.  Based on all of these needs Miami Township, decided on the E-ONE HR100 rear-mount, single-axle aerial.

Miami Township is a suburb of Cincinnati and, like most suburb neighborhoods, they have narrow residential roadways, small cul-de-sacs, tiny driveways, and the setbacks are 50-75 feet from the road. At first, one might think a 75-foot quint would work well in these conditions, and sometimes they do, however that 50-75 foot setback just gets you to the roof on most of these homes. This does not always give you the ability to reach the peak of the roof. The HR100 E-ONE gives Miami Township 25 more feet to accommodate that task and still has maneuverability close to the 75-foot quint.

With up to 220 cubic feet of storage space, the HR100 exceeds most manufacturers’ compartment space with a single rear wheel aerial.  This will allow for fire, rescue, and paramedic equipment all while still giving Miami Township a 470-gallon water tank and a 30-gallon foam tank.

Tanner (AL) Firefighters Scramble to Replace Truck After It Was Stolen, Totaled

The apparatus stolen from the Tanner (AL) Volunteer Fire Department has been deemed totaled, a loss of at least $200,000 to the department, which is now faced with trying to replace it, according to a report published by WAAY ABC 31.

The Ford F-550 based apparatus was one of four vehicles stolen and totaled by a suspect on Sunday morning crime spree, leaving the fire department without an often-used vehicle in the fleet, the report said.

It might take up a year to replace the wrecked apparatus, due to manufacturing delays, but the fire department is hoping to find a new rig in production already that can be purchased to help speed up the process, perhaps to as little as three to four months, according to the report.

Much of the equipment on the truck, worth about $70,000, was salvageable and the community will still be protected despite the loss, according to the report, which noted the department has four other vehicles that can help fill the gap.
