Watch: San Diego County (CA) Fire Protection District Breaks Ground for $14.6M East Otay Mesa Station 38

The San Diego County Fire Protection District broke ground Tuesday on Fire Station 38 in East Otay Mesa. Once built, the station will serve a rapidly developing area which includes warehouses, transport businesses, two power plants and a battery facility. Crews housed there will also respond to calls on expanding roads and highways in the area carrying traffic crossing the U.S. and Mexico border.

The $14.6 million station will be staffed with 12 personnel and have a ladder truck, a fire engine, ambulances and other apparatus and will be located just to the south of the intersection of Alta and Otay Mesa roads.

County officials held a ceremony Tuesday to kick off the construction project and to talk about its significance.

“This is a project that is long overdue for our communities. Each year, there are approximately 1,500 calls for this service area and we know the number will be increasing as well. With the future addition of the East Otay Mesa Port of Entry, the arrival of new businesses, and upcoming housing developments, East Otay Mesa has a very vibrant future,” said Vice Chair Nora Vargas, San Diego County Board of Supervisors, District 1. “This new station will ensure that we continue to meet the needs of a growing region.”

The station will be 14.000 square feet with four double-depth apparatus bays, 12 bedrooms, a kitchen, an office, a day room, a fitness room and a conference room.

Station 38 is designed to be the first Zero Net Energy fire station for the County with roof solar panels and is also designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.

“We look forward to being back in a year to have the grand opening,” said Chief Tony Mecham, CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire Protection District.

This year the County will be investing nearly $50 million annually into a cooperative agreement with CAL FIRE to staff 20 fire stations around-the-clock by employing over 200 personnel. When County-funded positions are combined with the State, San Diego County Fire is the second largest fire department in our region.

Shavers Creek (PA) Volunteer Fire Department Breaks Ground on New Station

The Shavers Creek Volunteer Fire Department recently broke ground on its future station. The $550,000 facility is expected to be ready by this Christmas.

The department writes:

From a one-classroom schoolhouse to a 2022 pre-engineered fire station. As most of you know, the Shavers Creek Volunteer Fire Department purchased the property of the Mooresville church to be able to build a fire station to serve the residents of West and Barree Township, as well as assisting surrounding fire Departments.

Over the last few months, the Fire Company has been meeting with different contractors trying to find the one that would best benefit us. And proudly we can say that we have officially given the approval and put a down payment to move forward and purchase a $550,000, 60-foot-wide-by-72-foot-long (4320 square feet) pre-engineered building with 1,500 square feet of office space through Scenic Ridge Construction Company.

We are excited to get the process started and have the new Station 11 up by Christmas 2022, maybe even sooner. We are excited to take these next few steps and can’t wait till we put the first shovel in the ground. The members of the Shaver’s Creek Fire Company are incredibly thankful for all the support from the community over the last few years to help us get this project underway.

We will be posting updates as much as we can, so be on the lookout. Anyone wishes to help us please reach out to a member or post to Facebook. We are looking for donations to offset the loan burden or if you have a trade skill give us a call.
