Sacramento Metro (CA) Fire Rolls Out Pink and Blue Fire Apparatus for Cancer Awareness Campaign

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District made the following Facebook post Monday, Oct. 1:

“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we’re bringing it … in the form of a 44,000-pound fire engine! We know early detection saves lives, so make sure you’re scheduling your annual physicals and diagnostics when appropriate … Don’t put it off!

“Thank you to the organizations that funded the pink and blue cancer awareness engine wrap through Pro Style Wraps in Rancho Cordova. Throughout the months of October and November, the engine will travel across all five Battalions as the frontline engine responding to service calls. Crews will have the opportunity to engage in community events within our local and regional jurisdiction, collaborating with our partnering organizations; the Sacramento Kings, the City of Citrus Heights, the City of Rancho Cordova, Local 522, and the SMFFA. These partnerships are crucial for enhancing the education and cancer awareness in our community.”

Cambridge (MA) FD Places New Pumper Into Service

The Cambridge Fire Department made the following Facebook post recently:

The Cambridge Fire Department placed its new pumper into service Monday, Sept. 30.

The new apparatus is a 2023 Pierce Enforcer, 1,250-gpm (gallons per minute) pump with a 500-gallon water tank. It incorporates TAK-4 T3 All Wheel Steering and energy efficient Idle Reduction Technology.

The All Wheel Steering will be advantageous in maneuvering through the narrow streets and tight corners of the district, especially during responses to emergency calls.

The pumper was delivered by the area distributor, Allegiance Fire and Rescue apparatus.

Thank you to the mechanics, tech services, and the members of Engine 2 (group 4) for completing the changeover.

As expected with the busiest company, the quick photo shoot in busy Lafayette Square was interrupted by the response to an alarm.

Engine 2 was organized in 1832 and has been bravely protecting Lafayette Square and our city for 192 years.

Fire Truck Training Conference: “Be the Obvious Choice”

At the beginning of Day 3, one of the most sought after classes, Tires: Everything You Thought You Knew, But Didn’t, began. Instructor TJ Tennent and Ron Winkleman led students through information on tires. Repeatedly asking the class, “How many knew that before,” no one could raise their hands. It turns out that as much as we may think we know about tires, there’s a lot we don’t know. But toward midmorning, Tennent challenged the class to “be the obvious choice.”

At the end of the day, The William F. Foster Outstanding Service Award was presented to Toronto Fire Services Division Chief, Asset and Equipment Management, Rob Anselmi. In between, more than 400 “obvious choices” participated in 150 class sessions. In addition to aerial maintenance, students had hands-on training for pump rebuilds, pump testing, the IDEX SAM system and different suspensions.

In his remarks after accepting the award, Anselmi was quick to thank REV and the Fire Truck Training Conference, but also to praise the technicians who have attended in the past up to now and the award’s namesake. “Mechanics are the worst
