Compartment Corner: Carmel (IN) Pierce Ascendant Tiller Aerial Ladder

By Mike Ciampo

The City of Carmel is a suburban city located just north of the City of Indianapolis. The city is mostly residential and has more than 40 corporate headquarters and regional offices. Another unique feature of the city is the large number of roundabouts or traffic circles within its limits. The city has gained the reputation of being the “Roundabout Capital of the United States.”

For these reasons, it’s easy to see why the Carmel Fire Department operates two tractor-drawn aerial devices, making maneuvering through these obstacles easier. The department operates out of six fire stations strategically placed around the city, providing fire protection and prevention, emergency medical operations, and tactical and hazardous material operations. The department operates on these incidents with the following equipment: six engine companies, two ladder companies, four ambulances, one Battalion vehicle, one safety vehicle, one EMS duty officer, one Tactical Service Unit (tactical and hazardous material responses), two boats, one command vehicle, three reserve engines, one reserve ladder, two reserve ambulances, and one rehab support vehicle.

Saybrook Township (OH) Awards $3M Construction Bid for Fire Station 2

Officials recently awarded a $3,065,000 bid to B & B Construction of Youngstown for a new Fire Station 2 in northern Saybrook Township, reports starbeacon.com.

The facility, to be located on Route 45, will be 8,000 square feet and have four drive-through bays and living quarters for crew members, the report notes.

In 2014, due to increased traffic, trustees decided to staff Station 2 on Carpenter Road for better protection. However, that facility doesn’t have living space or sewers, so the department rents a Lake Road house for on-duty personnel, according to the report.

Once the new station comes to fruition, the department will sell the Carpenter Road facility, officials say.

Total Motors Donates Chevy Silverado, $20k to LeMars (IA) Fire-Rescue

Ask and ye shall receive.

Total Motors answered a plea from LeMars Fire Rescue by donating a Chevy Silverado and $20,000 to outfit it.

The department asked for help acquiring a new brush/grass truck on Facebook…

…and the northwest IA car dealer delivered:

“Today, we showed our support to the LeMars Fire Rescue by presenting them with a $20,000 donation towards their new brush/grass truck,” Total Motors writes on Facebook. “After the dangerous fires that affected our community a couple of weeks ago, the Le Mars Fire-Rescue started a campaign to fund $50,000 for an additional unit to serve our communities that proved necessary.

“We proudly sourced them a reliable red Chevy Silverado 3500 that they plan to up-fit to serve our community. As we’ve seen too many times this spring, and especially recently, our firefighters and first responders must have the tools that allow them to protect our communities. This new addition will give them additional resources – not only in field fires but also in covering the areas that large fire trucks wouldn’t be able to approach or fit.

“Our emergency services and volunteers in Le Mars cover a large area of our county every day to keep our communities safe. Total Motors is proud to support our local Fire-Rescue as much as we can.

“The department still needs support to be able to outfit their new vehicle with a tank, pump, hose, and other accessories before it can be utilized. If you’d like to donate towards this cause, you can send a check or cash to:
