An off-duty Ferndale firefighter was killed while snowboarding near Mount Baker on Friday.
Whatcom County Fire District 7 shared his photo, saying firefighters are mourning the loss of their brother, Captain John DeVenere.

A fire damaged an apartment above a Monroe brewery Monday morning.
Around 7 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a smoke alarm going off in the 100 block of West Main Street, according to a social media post by the Snohomish County Regional Fire and Rescue. Fire officials confirmed the fire was coming from living quarters above Good Brewing Co.

A witness jumped into action after seeing a large house fire in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood early Monday morning.
Flames started shooting from the house just after 2 a.m. at 81st Street and South Shore Drive.
The fire spread to a second house, causing smoke damage.
A man told CBS 2 he was inside a CTA bus when he noticed the flames.
