National group meets in Texas to discuss prevention of firefighter deaths

Denver firefighters get second option in cancer-related medical costs

Denver firefighters now have a second option for covering cancer-related medical costs. The Denver City Council unanimously approved a bill that allows firefighters to join the Voluntary Cancer Benefits Award Program (VCAP) set up by the Colorado Firefighter Heart and Cancer Benefits Trust. This measure would exist in place of the existing workers' compensation program set up by the city, but there are a few key differences between the two programs that make the new one more attractive to city employees, city officials said.

Bolt Creek Fire: Wildfire smoke drifting over Snohomish County; US 2 still closed

Highway 2 between Index and Skykomish remains closed Monday as crews remove unsafe trees that were burned in the Bolt Creek Fire. A 13-mile stretch of U.S. 2 is closed between Sunset Falls, which is just east of Index-Galena Road, (milepost 36) and Fifth Street North in Skykomish (milepost 49). The trees that were burned in the fire could crash down onto the roadway, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Tacoma firefighters battle large brush fire in field west of South Tacoma Way

Tacoma firefighters were called to extinguish a brush fire Monday morning that flared up in a grassy field west of South Tacoma Way. No injuries were reported. Tacoma Fire Department assistant chief Sionna Stallings-Alailima said crews were dispatched at about 10:55 a.m. to 4336 S. Adams St. She said the fire was reported about 100 yards west of that location, between Adams and South Tyler Street.

Medical examiner releases identities of two people found dead after Seattle house fire

The King County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death of a woman found in a burned-down Montlake home last week to be a homicide. The medical examiner found 32-year-old Caitlin Savage died of multiple stab wounds. A second person, 53-year-old John Fuentes was also found dead in the home. The medical examiner found Fuentes died of smoke inhalation.
