Changing sign boosts call response, morale at Maine fire department

Morale in the workplace can go a long way. At one Maine fire department, it's helping them better help the community, even during a time when the impact of a firefighter shortage is felt at departments statewide. "Help wanted. Odd hours. Low pay. Sweet helmet." A sign outside the Lebanon Fire Department has captured the attention of hundreds on social media.

New Mexico fire department rolls out 'clean cab' engines to fight cancer risk in firefighters

VIDEO: New Mexico fire departments are looking to help protect their firefighters from getting cancer. The Bernalillo County Fire Department is now the first in the state to have fire engines built to help with that mission. BCFD said the number of firefighter deaths from cancer is increasing nationwide, in part, because of the exposure to carcinogens often left on their gear.

Columbia Gas will pay for extra Massachusetts firefighters

Courtesy of Columbia Gas, the city of Lawrence will have an extra crew of firefighters on duty for at least the first two months of this year. The natural gas provider has agreed to pay for an extra, three-person engine company of firefighters for January and February 2019, Fire Chief Brian Moriarty announced Wednesday.

Thank You, Firefighters! Los Angeles Dodgers Bat Around With First Responders

VIDEO: Some first responders, who are used to 96-hour shifts and tasked with saving our homes during raging wildfires, got the experience of a lifetime Wednesday as the Los Angeles Dodgers hosted the everyday heroes for batting practice. Several hundred first responders were welcomed by the Dodgers organization as a show of appreciation for battling the recent wildfires in Southern California.

Layoff plan may also cut 89 firefighters, furlough civilian employees in New Jersey

City cops aren't the only ones who may get pink slips as a result of Paterson’s budget crisis. The tentative layoff plan crafted by Mayor Andre Sayegh's administration would terminate 89 city firefighters in addition to the 112 Paterson police officers whose jobs are in danger, union leaders said Wednesday.
