Firefighters put out apartment fire in Seattle's International District

VIDEO: Seattle firefighters put out a fire at an apartment in the International District Thursday morning. According to the Seattle Fire Department, a fire started in a kitchen on the first floor of an apartment near S King St and 7th Ave S. Smoke from the fire went through the air ducts and billowed out the rooftop, spreading north into neighborhoods around Lake Union.

Volunteer firefighter in Yakima said he accepted any health risks despite gear concerns if it means saving lives

VIDEO: The cancer-causing chemicals that have been found in water, now can be found in firefighter gear. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or 'forever chemicals' help protect firefighters from heat and moisture because PFAS are almost impossible to break down. "It's kind of a catchphrase that's out there is that 'your gear's going to kill you,' this is still very much under research though," said East Valley Fire Department Chief Dale Hille.

Volunteer firefighters who are National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) members have one final chance to enter to win a personalized MSA Cairns® XF1 Fire Helmet. This is the last of three helmets that will be given away in 2022.

The jet-style design of the Cairns® XF1 Fire Helmet reduces snag hazards, provides a personalized fit, and houses its own integrated light module. Plus, the soft goods are removable, washable, and replaceable, helping firefighters align with cancer awareness programs as written by the Firefighter Cancer Support Network. Approvals include NFPA 1971-2018 Structural Firefighting and NFPA 1951-2013 Rescue and Recovery.

To be eligible to enter, applicants must be an active U.S. volunteer firefighter and a member of the NVFC; learn about member benefits and join at www.nvfc.org/join. One winner will be randomly selected to receive the helmet.

Saratoga Springs (NY) Fire Department Awarded $240,000 to Replace Breathing Apparatus

The City of Saratoga Springs (NY) Fire Department is being awarded $240,140 in federal funding through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program, Saratogian.com reported.

The funding will enable the department to replace and update self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and face pieces, the report said.
