Calumet City, Crete Township, Flossmoor and South Holland fire departments will receive federal grants to update firefighter safety equipment and fire station exhaust systems, reports The Chicago Tribune.
Calumet City will use its $142,000 grant to update the ventilation systems at two fire stations to remove toxic vehicle exhaust. The grant also will be used to buy protective gear for firefighters.
The Crete Township Fire Protection District will use its $52,000 award to install new vehicle exhaust systems at its fire stations, Fire Chief Jeffery Panega said.
The Flossmoor Fire Department was awarded $222,000 in grant money to update breathing equipment for firefighters, replacing current equipment that is nearly 20 years old.
