A brand new fire station, certified to withstand a Category Five hurricane, is now open in West Palm Beach.

A new fire truck and equipment will cost about $900,000 with the airport responsible for 10 percent of the cost. The equipment includes self-contained breathing apparatus, bunker gear and loose tools for the truck. Some of the equipment has already arrived and been put into use.

The Garretsville Freedom Nelson Joint Fire District recently had its 70-foot ladder truck refurbished. The repairs, which cost just over $53,000, included $13,000 worth of body work, including reflectors, frame sandblasting sealing, and new paint. Other work included new fluids in the ladder’s hydraulic system, water pump, leveling system, suspension and steering.
