Happy 150th to Wheeling (WV) Fire Department’s Station 4

The Wheeling Fire Department Sunday held an open house at its Station 4 to celebrate the facility’s 150th year of service.

“For 150 years, a firehouse serving that section of the city has maintained a presence on its current lot,” the department writes on Facebook. “From Noon to 2 p.m., Sunday, March 13, WFD will allow citizens to tour the facility and learn about the history of the station with department personnel. The department’s mascot, ‘Fire Pup,’ also will be on hand for kids to meet and take photos with the trucks.

“Station 4, located at 3618 Jacob Street, opened on March 13, 1872. According to historical documents, there was little fanfare when the station opened. The original station was constructed shortly after the town of South Wheeling was incorporated into the City of Wheeling in 1871.

“Nicknamed the ‘8th Ward Hose House,’ Station 4 is the only station that has retained its original designation and truck number in the city. The original station was razed in 1953, forcing firefighters to work temporarily out of a nearby Cooey-Bentz warehouse until the current building, which currently houses Engine 4 and Squad 3 was constructed in 1954.

“The primary response district for Station 4 is the South Wheeling area from 27th Street to the city limit at 48th Street.”

Amesbury (MA) Engine and Ambulance Collide in Icy Conditions

Two Amesbury Fire Department apparatus, an engine and an ambulance, were damaged when they slid while parked at a call during Saturday evening’s slippery and snowy conditions. The fire engine sustained further damage when a small electrical fire broke out later in the evening, the department announced in a news release.

On Saturday, March 12 at 8 p.m., Amesbury Fire Rescue responded to a reported motor vehicle crash on Whitehall Road. Amesbury Engine 1 and Ambulance 2 responded and stopped at the crest of a hill. Both vehicles had their parking brakes set, but given slippery conditions at the time, both vehicles soon began sliding backwards for several feet. Engine 1 stopped at the edge of a curb, but Ambulance 2, which was parked in front of the engine, slid into the front of the engine.

Neither vehicle sustained serious damage, but both had to wait for an Amesbury Public Works sander to arrive and provide grit to help the apparatus gain the necessary traction to get underway again.

No one was injured at either the initial motor vehicle crash — which also involved a vehicle skidding off the road in the slippery conditions — or the incident involving the apparatus.

However, upon returning to the firehouse, Engine 1 experienced a small electrical fire and had to be pulled out onto the apron of the fire house, where it was quickly extinguished. Fire officials determined the fire was caused and confined to external battery jumper terminals.

Engine 1 will be out of service until necessary repairs and inspections can be made. Ambulance 2 was inspected and deemed fit to resume duty.

A spare engine from the City of Newburyport arrived on loan this weekend and will be in service until Engine 1 is repaired. Amesbury Fire Rescue, Chief Fire Chief Kenneth E. Berkenbush, Mayor Kassandra Gove and the City of Amesbury thank Newburyport Fire, Chief Christopher LeClaire and Mayor Sean Reardon for their support.
