Amid Washington's wildfire season, the state's aerial firefighting fleet is ready to respond

VIDEO: As state firefighters prepare for a busy summer wildfire season, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has a goal: respond to fires within 20 minutes of calls for help. Dave Ritchie, chief of Air Operations for the state’s wildfire crews, said the goal is realistic thanks to a growing aerial fleet.

Yearly Tri-City Fallen Firefighter Memorial Ride returns July 4

Benton County Fire District 1 is hosting its yearly Tri-City Fallen Firefighter Memorial Ride on the Fourth of July in honor of fallen firefighters across the Tri-Cities. The event happens every year on July 4, the anniversary of the death of firefighter Paul Bjorklund. Bjorklund died in an accident while fighting a fire on the Jump Off Joe Butte in 1992.

Fiery crash closes southbound I-5 near Lacey for hours

VIDEO: A fiery crash shut down southbound Interstate 5 near Lacey early Thursday morning. The road has since completely reopened. Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders said he was traveling down southbound I-5 searching for a suspect who fled a traffic stop when he spotted a multi-vehicle collision near exit 111.

VIDEO: Large fire spreads in building on Chicago's West Side, second in 2 days

A large fire creating huge amounts of smoke broke out at a building on Chicago's West Side Wednesday evening, the second massive fire in the city within two days—and even within 24 hours. Fire crews sprayed water from multiple angles at the building in 2800 block of West Grand Avenue, near the intersection with California Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

NFPA releases overview of fatal firefighter injuries in 2023

In 2023, 89 firefighters in the United States died from traumatic injuries, heart attacks, strokes, or aneurysms while on duty or within 24 hours of duty. This fatal injury count is a decrease over the 97 fatal injuries the previous year, but it is otherwise the second highest since 2013, during which there were 98 on-duty deaths.
