South County Fire Commissioners sworn in

PHOTO: South County Fire’s Board of Commissioners swore in three members, including one newly elected commissioner, at a meeting Tuesday. Retired Fire Chief Edward Widdis joins the board after being elected in November to one of two at-large commissioner positions. Widdis served as chief of Snohomish County Fire District 1 from 2003 to 2015 after spending 25 years as a firefighter.

VIDEO: Massive fire tears through California home, cause under investigation

Arson investigators are looking into the cause of a massive fire that tore through a home in Point Loma early Tuesday, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Brian Raines. Both San Diego Fire and San Diego Police were alerted to the fire at about 5:30 a.m. by a call reporting a burglary and a fire at the home on Liggett Drive just north of Point Loma Park.

FDNY Firefighter returns to work over 1 year after being injured in deadly fire

VIDEO: An FDNY firefighter who spent over a year recovering from injuries he suffered fighting a house fire returned to work Monday. Robert Velazquez was greeted as he walked back into Engine 257, Ladder 170 in Canarsie, Brooklyn. In a Facebook post, the FDNY said in part, "With the support of his family, friends, and his FDNY family, and through sheer determination and grit, Firefighter Velazquez is back at his second home, his firehouse.

Emergency legislation allows retired firefighters, police officers to work for Washington, D.C. 911 call center

The D.C. Council unanimously passed emergency legislation Tuesday that could help solve an ongoing staffing shortage at the 911 call center. The bill, which had nine cosponsors, allows retired firefighters and police officers to work as call takers and dispatchers without losing any pay from their pensions.

1915 fire engine completes journey back to New Mexico

PHOTOS: A century-old fire engine once in the service of Las Cruces firefighters completed a long journey this week from a salvage yard, to a local home, all the way to Oregon and back again. It was briefly parked, looking shiny and new, in front of Las Cruces City Hall Monday, as LCFD Chief Jason Smith celebrated its donation back to the city at the regular city council meeting.
