There’s a reason that the death toll of the Winecoff hotel fire in 1946 has never been surpassed.
Immediately after the disaster that killed 119 people, cities across the country began to re-examine their fire codes.
In their definitive 1993 book, “The Winecoff Fire,” co-authors Sam Heys and Allen Goodwin point out that the blaze prompted new laws requiring sprinkler systems, fire escapes and fire doors.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a man was killed and two others injured when a fire broke out early Monday while the three were inside a parked van in Pierce County, authorities said. Firefighters were called to the vehicle, which was at 92nd Street and Tacoma Way, in Lakewood shortly after 4 a.

A Central Kitsap homeowner who jumped from his roof was uninjured after he escaped a blaze early Friday morning that burned the home near the shore of Hood Canal, according to Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue. A neighbor first called 911 to report the house fire, according to CKFR, prompting firefighters to be dispatched to the 16000 block of Olympic View Road NW in Silverdale at about 2:16 a.
