More than 1,000 fill church to honor fallen Denver firefighter

More than 1,000 people — including family, friends and firefighters from across the country — packed a funeral here for a fallen Denver firefighter. The gathering filled with emotional, heartfelt homage would have made John P. Whelan III, a 15-year-veteran of the Denver Fire Department, uncomfortable, said Assistant Fire Chief Tony Gonzalez, a friend of Whelan's.

Phoenix Fire Dept. forced to remove union stickers off engines, vehicles

The Phoenix Fire Department is in the middle of an overhaul over stickers on fire engines and other official vehicles. The issue was first brought forth in April by Mark Spencer, a former police officer and former Police Law Enforcement Association or PLEA president. Spencer now works for Judicial Watch.

Family sues Detroit in death of baby after EMT delay

The family of an 8-month-old girl who died after an emergency medical technician refused to go to her home when she stopped breathing has filed a lawsuit against the City of Detroit and the Detroit Fire Department, seeking at least $1 million in damages. The family, who is being represented by the Geoffrey Fieger Law Firm, is suing the city and fire department on two counts of gross negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

California City Council To Consider Emergency Care Fee

Those receiving emergency medical attention from Long Beach Fire Department personnel may soon be subject to a $250 fee, which fire officials hope will help offset costs for the financially strapped department. The First Responder Fee will be considered during a Long Beach City Council meeting Tuesday, July 21, and could potentially be implemented by mid-August if the council approves the resolution, according to Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal Rich Brandt.

D.C.: Fire Official Assigned to Metro to Boost Coordination

Metro has added a fire/rescue liaison to its "nerve center" following the fatal smoke incident in January. In an announcement Monday, Metro said the new staff member in the Rail Operations Control Center will help coordinate communication between Metro and first responders in the event of an emergency.
