The Seymour (IN) Fire Department (SFD) broke ground on its $5.75 million replacement Station 2 at 1019 W. Second St.

Replacing the station, built in 1967 at 500 W. Fifth St., has been in the works for about a decade, according to tribtown.com. In 2019 the new facility received the green light.

On the heels of the new digs, SFD plans to add an assistant chief position, the report says.

The city—which paid $403,000 to Premier Ag Co-op for the site in late October—is issuing $9.9 million in bonds to pay for the construction of the new fire station and renovations to its Station 1 and City Hall, according to the report.

Jerry Sanford retired to Naples, Florida, after a 29-year career as a New York City firefighter, but the city managed to call him back to help his brothers right before one of the most critical times in the history of the United States: 9/11.
