Research Participants Join Efforts to Improve Firefighter Health

While Illinois Firefighter/Paramedic Justin McWilliams knows he’s thrust into "toxic soup" when he does his job, he’s also anxious to learn how to protect himself. That’s why he and 11 other firefighters rolled up their sleeves, gave blood and wore a number of monitors while they participated in a number of scenarios at the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI).

Detroit Fire Dept. EMT fired after refusing to help baby

The Detroit fire commissioner has fired an EMT who refused to help a baby when she was just minutes away from the home. Commissioner Edsel Jenkins said Ann Marie Thomas's employment with the Detroit Fire Department has been terminated. "Today, we conducted an appeals hearing, which Ms. Thomas requested.

New York town must pay diabetic firefighter $100,000+ after illegal firing

A diabetic Syracuse firefighter must be paid nearly two years' worth of lost wages and benefits after an appeals court ruled the city illegally fired him in 2013. John Williams, of Camillus, will also be first in line for the next open position in the city fire department, said labor lawyer Nathaniel Lambright.

2 California firefighters injured in stabbing during medical call

Two firefighters were stabbed while assisting a patient Wednesday afternoon during a medical-aid call in the East Village, authorities reported. Firefighter bitten by bear while working Alaska wildfire

A firefighter battling a blaze in the Chugach National Forest is being treated for minor injuries after a run-in with a bear Monday night, fire officials said Tuesday. The man was bitten by the bear as he fought the Juneau Lake Fire, according to a statement posted on the Alaska Wildland Fire Information blog.
