Fire Department prepares for strict enforcement in Yakima County

With the holiday weekend right around the corner, firefighters want you to be aware of the consequences of illegal fireworks. Using fireworks is a misdemeanor offense, which could mean a $1,000 fine, or up to 90 days in jail. Fire Stations throughout Yakima County will have extra patrols on duty, to make sure no illegal activity sparks flames.

Related: 'Dramatic' increase in containment expected on Sleepy Hollow Fire

During a press conference Tuesday morning, fire officials in Wenatchee said they expect containment of the Sleepy Hollow Fire to increase dramatically by Tuesday night. Firefighters are mopping up hot spots and clearing away any dry fuels that might reignite the fire. So far, the fire has destroyed 24 homes and 4,000 people remain under level 2 evacuations.

UPS semi truck burns for hours along I-5 near Olympia

A semi truck caught fire on Interstate 5 south of Olympia near the Scatter Creek rest stop overnight and continued burning for hours, the Washington State Patrol reports. State troopers monitored the UPS truck as its 19,000 pounds of cargo burned, creating a huge plume of smoke. The blaze started around 2 a.

Two injured in Whidbey Island plane crash

A pilot and passenger were injured Monday night when their small plane crashed into a tree on Whidbey Island. The Cessna 182, which took off from Monroe, lost power at about 8:12 p.m and slammed into a tree behind a home on the island, according to Ed Wallace with the Island County sheriff's office.

Wenatchee wildfire 'like watching a natural disaster within arm's reach'

From just across the Wenatchee River, Dominick Bonny watched a whole neighborhood in his town burn as a wildfire destroyed two dozen homes and forced hundreds to flee. "With the wind blowing away from us, it was like we were watching a natural disaster within arm's reach," he said. The Sleepy Hollow wildfire fueled by triple-digit temperatures and strong winds roared into town Sunday afternoon.
