Spokane Fire Department prepares for early and extended fire season

As the Inland Northwest grapples with drought conditions, the Spokane Fire Department is preparing for what could be an early and extended fire season. Justin De Ruyter from the Spokane Fire Department explained the challenges ahead. “We know we’re gonna have fires earlier, possibly longer. And then and typically at bigger you just got more fields that are drier and available to burn. It takes time,” said De Ruyter.

The U.S. Drought Monitor has characterized the region as “abnormally dry,” raising concerns among firefighters about potential resource shortages. De Ruyter noted, “For us it’s more of a probably fire season starting earlier, potentially lasting longer. And then the other concern just be the resources being tied up on other fires.”

Idaho Governor Brad Little also expressed his concerns during a recent conference, specifically about the lack of snowpack. “If our snowpack remains in this dire shape, those problems are going to come to fruition very soon,” said Little.

WSU Students’ Dangerous Football Victory Couch Fires Tradition Shifts To Seahawks Following Super Bowl Win

Washington State University students’ dangerous tradition of burning couches to celebrate football victories shifted to the Seahawks on Sunday night. City of Pullman Firefighters responded to two couches that were set on fire in streets near campus following Seattle’s Super Bowl win over the Patriots. The last College Hill couch fires came in November of 2024 following a Cougar football home win over Utah State.

The City of Pullman’s Firefighters Union posted a warning about football victory couch fires on their Facebook page Sunday morning. It reminded the public that burning couches is not a harmless tradition. The firefighters pointed out that they quickly overwhelm emergency crews. That potentially dangerous scenario played out Sunday night as a Pullman Firefighters responded to a small attic fire during the Super Bowl.
