Many homes burned in Sleepy Hollow Fire had cedar roofs

Homeowners in the Broadview neighborhood say they were given a choice between wood, tile or slate roofs. At least one homeowner says this may have been the reason so many homes were lost. Fourteen years ago, Carolyn Barnes and her husband built their dream home in the hills above Wenatchee. 48 hours after a fire ripped through her neighborhood, she's taking a look at the damage and wondering why she was so lucky.

Wenatchee industrial fire may have burned hazardous materials

Another big challenge for firefighters in Wenatchee is a smoldering industrial fire, right in the middle of town. They're concerned possibly-hazardous materials may have burned, but on Tuesday the melted structures were so hot, firefighters weren't able to take a close look. "It was the scariest thing I think I've ever seen in my life," said Kari Erickson, who runs Wenatchee School of Karate, right down the street from the industrial fire.

Brush fire concerns skyrocket as temperatures soar

He stands on a rich carpet of green grass in front of his home, a popsicle in one hand, a garden hose in the other. Yes, Asgar Ali takes pride in his property. But the watering is about more than just good looks. "My lawn is green and wet so it doesn't catch fire," he said on a day his fire department issued a warning about the unusually high number of brush fires over the past month.

Fire Department prepares for strict enforcement in Yakima County

With the holiday weekend right around the corner, firefighters want you to be aware of the consequences of illegal fireworks. Using fireworks is a misdemeanor offense, which could mean a $1,000 fine, or up to 90 days in jail. Fire Stations throughout Yakima County will have extra patrols on duty, to make sure no illegal activity sparks flames.

Related: 'Dramatic' increase in containment expected on Sleepy Hollow Fire

During a press conference Tuesday morning, fire officials in Wenatchee said they expect containment of the Sleepy Hollow Fire to increase dramatically by Tuesday night. Firefighters are mopping up hot spots and clearing away any dry fuels that might reignite the fire. So far, the fire has destroyed 24 homes and 4,000 people remain under level 2 evacuations.
