Memphis Fire Department Launches Program to Free Up Ambulances

An initiative launched by the Memphis Fire Department is designed to free up ambulances for real emergencies. For several months, the pilot program known as "Right Response" helps those in need of medical attention without tying up ambulances.
The base price for an ambulance ride will cost you $850. In an effort to cut-back on rides for non-emergencies, 'Healthcare Navigators' are now operational. The fully-equipped, medical mobile units have everything needed to administer aid.

Groundbreaking for New Coles District (VA) Fire Station to Replace Older Facility

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Coles District Fire Station, which will replace the current fire station, was recently held at the site, 13712 Dumfries Road.
The new 21,400-square-foot station will house an engine, heavy rescue, a tanker, a basic life support ambulance, hazardous material response units and a brush truck. The existing station is 18,500 square feet and was built in 1979. It will be razed at the completion and occupation of the new building.

The county’s Department of Fire and Rescue Chief, Kevin McGee, also spoke at the groundbreaking and said the new station will be energy efficient and cost efficient to operate and maintain. The new building will also allow fire and rescue personnel to work more effectively by shortening response times, McGee said. “This station is designed to get our responders to their apparatus and on to their response route as quickly as possible in a faster and safer way than we are today. That’s going to be shaving off response times from the many thousands of emergency incidents we respond to from this station for many decades to come.”

Fire Departments from Around the State Send Relief Crews to Charlottesville (VA)

Roanoke Fire-EMS Chief David Hoback said the least he could do was send an ambulance and some firefighters to Charlottesville to offer crews relief after violence erupted at a protest over the weekend. "Our hearts go out those men and women in public safety and what they're going through," Hoback said.

Several fire departments around the state answered a request to send employees to help the Charlottesville Fire Department answer calls so overworked employees could return home to see families and rest before returning to work.

Roanoke sent an ambulance, three firefighter-paramedics and an EMS operations officer to Charlottesville for a Monday shift of answering fire and EMS calls. He said none of the calls dealt with protesters.

Hoback said Roanoke has made requests for assistance in the past, and has received it. He said Roanoke Fire-EMS has also offered assistance to other departments in the past.
