Vernon Lone Fire Engine Down 10 days, Counting

VERNON -- Few sounds can unnerve a man -- and stop him mid-sentence.It's the sound of a fire-pager siren that does it for Mike Owens, Vernon's fire chief."Unfortunately, no, you don't always," -- the siren went off.

The engine was down last week when a car fire broke out, locally, Owens recollected. Luckily, neighboring fire stations were available to respond with the appropriate equipment, as Vernon typically also responds when other cities have engine problems.

Until the engine is repaired, the fire department is relying on its tanker, which holds 2,200 gallons of water to supply to the city’s single engine, and brush-fire truck. Neither are equipped to handle structure and vehicle fires.

City Pushes to Reopen Tideflats Fire Station Sooner

In October, Tacoma's Tideflats will have a round-the-clock firefighting operation for the first time in years after the City Council approved staffing a 24-hour engine company out of the training center there. Right now, there is no working fire station on the Tideflats.

The department recently won a grant to pay for staffing the station starting in July 2018, he added.

Amid recession-era budget cuts, the city slashed funding to its fire department. That meant cutting away firefighting operations in the Tideflats, and opting instead to maintain service in more residential parts of Tacoma, Duggan said.

But with the amount of flammable materials stored in and move through the Tideflats by truck or rail, the lack of a firefighting presence is dangerous, council members said. Puget Sound Energy’s planned liquefied natural gas plant on the Tideflats that will store up to 8 million gallons of LNG was an implied factor in the need for jumpstarting firefighting services.

Rising Sun Regional Foundation awarded $35,000 and the John A. Hillenbrand Foundation allocated $10,000 for the replacement of a 25-year generator.

“This new generator is crucial for providing backup power and keeping the station operational especially in times of emergency or inclement weather,” Chief Todd Schutte said. “The previous generator was too small and inadequate to serve daily functions and we needed this to provide the best service for our citizens.”

Officials Break Ground on Fire Station 15 Replacement Facility

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services officials are hoping a replacement facility for its fire station in downtown Lawrenceville will provide some needed breathing room. The current Fire Station 15 facility that is located a block off of the Lawrenceville Square was built nearly 40 years ago and was meant to house a smaller group of employees.

Fire department Capt. Tommy Rutledge said the existing Fire Station 15 is 6,324 square feet in size, and has two bays for fire apparatuses. The new facility, he said, will have 10,788 square feet of space, three bays, a commercial grade kitchen, facilities for male and female employees.

Rutledge also said the new facility, which is expected to take about a year to build, will allow up to 12 employees to work on each shift whereas the currently facility can only accommodate a maximum of eight. Twenty-seven people work at the station.
