Tara O’Connor is a firefighter and EMT for Atkins Volunteer Fire Department. She’s learned to overcome narcolepsy, and is using World Narcolepsy Day, held every year on September 22, to tell her story. O’Connor joined the department two years ago at age 22. She wanted to do it right after high school but had to figure out what was wrong first.

VIDEO: Two people have been hospitalized with minor injuries after an early morning house fire in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Five people in all escaped from the home on Carleton Street around 3 a.m. Thursday before firefighters were able to arrive. Fire Chief David Moriarty said heavy fire was showing on the second floor when firefighters first arrived at the scene.

Seven fires broke out in homeless camps across the city Wednesday and crews have responded to 62 in just the past two weeks. It's a dangerous pace putting not just the campsites but the surrounding neighborhoods at risk. The number of fires breaking out around tents is well beyond the total for all of last year and there’s more than three months to go.

A fire in the back of a little yellow house on Norris Road in Vancouver, Wash., Wednesday morning was stopped before it spread to the rest of the house — thanks in part to two sisters who ran across the street for help from just the right neighbors. Their house is almost directly across the street from Vancouver Fire Department Station 2.

The Tivoli Fire Company will welcome a fire truck and ambulance, reports Mid Hudson News.

The fire department posted to Facebook, “Our Wetdown is being done to celebrate the arrival of our 2 new emergency vehicles that have recently replaced the ones we lost in the fire. There will be multiple fire companies in attendance all of who played a vital role in helping us rebuild and get back on our feet. This celebration is open to the public and is a free event for everyone!! Children will be able to see a variety of different fire apparatus as well as enjoy food, raffles, and purchase commemorative merchandise.”

The wetdown ceremony will kick off a campaign to raise funds for a new addition to the firehouse. The expansion will include a new Red Cross Emergency Shelter and multi-purpose space for community activities.

The capital campaign goal is $3 million, with funds coming from private donations and public funding.
