The U.S. government has opened a formal investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot partially automated driving system after a series of collisions with parked emergency vehicles. The investigation covers 765,000 vehicles, almost everything that Tesla has sold in the U.S. since the start of the 2014 model year.

Northwest researchers are looking to the skies to help monitor wildfires as well as spot new ones with a new fire behavior forecasting system. The system uses satellites to help firefighters on the ground. The views from space have helped map multiple wildfires this year. Satellites use infrared technology to peer through smoke.

More than 500 homes and structures near Lake Chelan were under level 3 evacuation orders Wednesday morning due to a wildfire. A level 3 evacuation means “leave immediately.” The Twenty-Five Mile Fire started Sunday afternoon and has burned an estimated 7,072 acres by 10:10 a.m. Wednesday, according to Chelan County Emergency Management.

A historic railroad bridge near the town of Beverly was destroyed by a small brush fire Monday evening. The fire burned about 10 acres of sage brush but destroyed the small railroad bridge that is part of the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail, according to the sheriff’s office. The bridge crosses over Crab Creek near Beverly.

The El Dorado City Commission approved a fire truck purchase, reports The Butler County Times-Gazette.

The purchase is for a fire engine to replace Engine No. 9, which will then be moved to reserve status, replacing an older engine currently on reserve status.
