A fifth alarm that burned through two Jersey City homes brought down a live power line on firefighters, injuring seven of them. The fire broke out between the Irving Street homes just before 3 a.m. this morning and quickly spread. As firefighters arrived, an energized power line came down on their fire truck, shocking at least four firefighters and a captain.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: At least five planes have made emergency landings on San Diego-area freeways in recent years, resulting in one death, multiple injuries and various amounts of damage. The latest came Tuesday when a single-engine Piper PA-32 landed shortly after noon on Interstate 5 east of the Del Mar Fairgrounds, hitting a Kia sedan and losing part of a wing after it became lodged in the back of an Audi SUV.

A large crowd of firefighters took the podium at City Council on Tuesday, pleading for higher pay. Mayor Kelly's budget is currently under review, and one measure focuses on a 24% salary increase for fire cadets. Right now, the starting salary is $32,524 . The increase would bump it up to $40,330. It's an increase that firefighters say is sorely needed.

Instead of running from the fire, he ran toward it. “It was just a split reaction. ‘I need to go do this,’ and I did it,” he said.
