Independence Day fire in New York destroyed Fitzgerald's Hotel in 1946

An Independence Day afternoon fire at Fitzgerald’s Hotel, “one of the city’s most famous eating places,” in 1946 became the center of attention in downtown Glens Falls. “More than a thousand persons were attracted to the scene by the heavy palls of smoke which at times nearly obliterated the building and firemen working on ladders along the facade,” The Post-Star reported.

Historic Tacoma building destroyed after large 4th of July fire

VIDEO/PHOTOS: A historic building in Tacoma is just a pile of rubble after a fire ripped through the building on the 4th of July. It happened along Tacoma Avenue South near 15th Street as fireworks were erupting in the downtown neighborhood. The 20,000 square foot building was destroyed. It took heavy equipment Monday to bring down what remained of what was once Coast House Materials – a building supplies company that served the community for more than a century.

Crews battle stubborn 2-alarm fire in White Center strip mall

PHOTOS: Several businesses erupted in flames early Monday in an old strip mall along the main business strip in White Center, officials said. Crews initially responded to the scene, at 16th Avenue and Roxbury Street, at around 2 a.m. after receiving reports of smoke and flames at the site. A second alarm was sounded soon afterward, and firefighters have been at the scene since then, battling the stubborn flames that are hard to reach because of the way the buildings are constructed.

Fire breaks out at old church in Battle Ground, likely caused by fireworks

Fireworks are likely to blame for a fire burning at the old Cherry Grove Church in Battle Ground, Washington on Monday, Clark-Cowlitz Fire & Rescue said. The fire was reported early Monday morning at the church along Northeast 92nd Avenue. Based on surveillance video from neighbors, fire investigators say someone drove up to the church and tossed "possible flaming material" at the church before speeding away.

Batterman Fire in Douglas County grows to 7,900 acres, 80 structures threatened

A wildfire in Douglas County is estimated to be at least 7,900 acres and about 10% contained as of Monday evening. The fire grew 5,400 acres over the last 24 hours.
