More than 40,000 people were killed last year in traffic crashes, according to preliminary data released Monday, remaining above pre-pandemic levels but slightly down from their peak in 2021.
The new data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration adds to concerns that little is being done to address one of the most common causes of preventable deaths.

VIDEO: New recruits to the Spokane Valley Fire Department are three weeks into their 18-week training program.
They have primarily focused on becoming familiar with firefighting gear and equipment in the first few weeks and have now progressed to working with live flames.
SVFD Training Captain Brad Huffman says that the program ensures all recruits are ready for anything on day one.

Firefighters with the Airway Heights Fire Department and Spokane County Fire District 10 are investigating a deadly house fire that left one person and one cat dead.
The fire reportedly occurred at a home on West Whitetip Avenue. At this time, the fire is out and crews and investigating what sparked it.

VIDEO: Three people are recovering after a massive house fire happened on Tuesday in Federal Way.
Video shot by a KIRO 7 photographer shows the house fully engulfed in flames.
When a KIRO7 crew returned to check out the damage Wednesday morning, there was still a hotspot burning and a strong smell of smoke lingering in the air.

Minneapolis crews are battling a fire at a vacant apartment building early Thursday morning.
The fire started just before midnight at the corner of Fifth Avenue South and 19th Street, just south of downtown. Firefighters say flames were burning from the top floor of the boarded-up building. Crews tried to put out the fire from inside, but they had to get out when the top floor started to collapse.
