The Mount Prospect Fire Department has launched a new initiative combining fire safety education with the tradition of summer reading. The department's new Fire Prevention Library Boxes, located outside all three fire stations, are filled with fire safety information, coloring books, bookmarks and other free items, as well as books that can be taken home, read and returned.

PHOTOS: Photos were sent of what looked like a happening at Hook & Ladder 8 last week and it sure was: the good folks at the Buffalo Ghostbusters dedicated a replacement Ghostbusters sign to the firehouse, since the nearly 40-year-old original was showing its wear and had lost a finger. But there’s more, with a pandemic silver lining bonus: During the past year, with everything closed down, the Buffalo Ghostbusters — one of about 200 fan franchises across the country — were trying to stay active with their ectoplasmic activities while staying distant.

An early morning house fire in Vancouver Monday killed a dog and sent another to an emergency vet clinic, according to fire officials. Clark County Fire District 6 told FOX 12 that a fire ignited just before 4:30 a.m. at a home in the 600 block of Northwest 94th Avenue. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they could see flames coming from the house.
