Rumford (ME) Board Chooses Possible Site for Fire Station

The Board of Selectmen has selected town land for a possible fire station, reports Sun Journal.

The project could cost up to $5 million and take two to three years. Town officials have realized the need for a new station since the 1990s but have been unsuccessful in three attempts to obtain funding. Twice, townspeople rejected proposals, and in 2009 the town was awarded a $3 million grant which fell through.

A town official applied for a $1 million grant for a training center through the Maine State Construction Institute. If it is awarded, there would be no cost to local taxpayers

Shreveport (LA) Welcomes Three Fire Apparatus

The Shreveport Fire Department announces that the department has received three new fire engines, reports KSLA 12 News.

An event has been scheduled to show the public the trucks and show how the department plans to reduce firefighter illnesses and injuries. Multiple ranks of the fire apparatus committee looked at the best trends to see what will work for SFD.

Inmate Firefighter Takes Fire Apparatus on Joy in Shingle Springs (CA) Ride

A state prison inmate firefighter stole a fire engine in Shingle Springs and drove it into a ditch, reports Fox 40.

The suspect led California Highway Patrol units on a slow-speed chase before the engine ripped out 100 feet of fencing. The fire engine then ran into the yard of a truck rack company where inventory was stacked up, leaving behind a trail of twisted steel.

No one was injured other than the suspect, who suffered cuts and scratches. He had ended up in a ditch after driving out of the truck rack yard, severely damaging the engine.

Alaska Firefighter Ejected from Forestry Truck in Rollover Crash

An Alaska Division of Forestry firefighter was seriously injured in a single-vehicle rollover accident Saturday as he drove to the Munson Creek Fire near Chena Hot Springs east of Fairbanks.

The firefighter was traveling alone to the fire at the end of Chena Hot Springs Road at around 5:20 p.m. in a state forestry truck when the vehicle went off the road near Mile 39 and rolled multiple times. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and sustained extensive injuries, according to a news release from the Alaska Division of Forestry.

Medics at the nearby Munson Creek Fire burning just south of Chena Hot Springs at Mile 56.5 responded to the accident. A Fairbanks Area Forestry helicopter transported the driver to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and he was medevaced to Providence Medical Center in Anchorage later that evening.

The firefighter was listed in serious but stable condition on Sunday and Alaska State Troopers are investigating the accident.

Thief Steals Newark (NJ) Battalion Chief’s Truck

A thief stole a fire truck from the Newark (NJ) Fire Department while it was out of quarters on Sunday afternoon.

According to a report published by RSL Media.com, the suspect jumped into a Newark fire battalion truck at about 1 pm on July 4th. Newark officers quickly found the vehicle and began a pursuit. Officers with the Port Authority, State Police and the North Bergen Police were notified of the chase.

Police lost the vehicle on the New Jersey Turnpike, but later found the vehicle and driver when he bailed from the truck in Ridgefield Park, NJ, according to the published report.
