It’s hard enough to be a volunteer firefighter. They rush into burning buildings. They get up in the middle of the night to battle blazes. They save lives.
“I personally don’t think you should be selling hoagies in the rain, in the freezing cold, on the weekend,” Pennsylvania state Rep. Ryan Warner, R-Fayette County, told a group of firefighters assembled at the state Capitol Monday morning.

PHOTO: On Friday evening, members of five local fire departments were engaged in a fierce fight — not with a fire, but with each other. Instead of their usual tools — hoses, axes and ladders — they were chucking foam balls at each other, playing dodgeball.
It was a strange sight to see. Firefighters from the Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Bloomingdale, Paul Smiths-Gabriels and Duane volunteer fire departments packed into the gymnasium of the Citizen Advocates building (the former Pius X high school) in Saranac Lake, paying dodgeball in full firefighting gear.

As Washington state's wildfire season gets underway, lawmakers in Olympia are close to passing legislation that would help give firefighters the necessary tools for battling wildfires.
House Bill 1168 is aimed at reducing the threat of wildfires across the state of Washington by creating a dedicated fund that would provide $125 million every two years to boost wildfire response, accelerate forest restoration and support community resilience.

VIDEO: A Methow Valley woman was nearing the end of a 1,500-mile road trip early Saturday when she carried out a heroic highway rescue.
Candice Burt, 39, of Twisp came upon a one-car rollover along Highway 17 near Soap Lake just after 1 a.m., with the driver trapped inside and the car on fire. Candice called 911 and pulled the driver from the wreck, just before the vehicle — a 2005 Acura TL lying on its passenger side — went up in flames.

Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire at a home near Shadle Park High School Monday morning.
The fire was reported around 7:45 a.m. near W Heroy Ave and N Maple St. Fire crews said one person was treated for smoke inhalation, but no other injuries were reported.
