Watertown (NY) Fire Department’s Former Rescue Truck Finds New Owner

According to a report from NNY360, the Watertown (NY) Fire Department’s (WFD’s) heavy rescue truck, a 2005 American LaFrance, that sold at auction in February for $25,900 has arrived at its home in Oriskany, New York.

New owner and high bidder Matthew Shannon of Village Motors assured the WFD that he has big plans for the truck, saying he has no intentions of reselling it. However, Shannon did not want to speak on his specific plans, but he did say he and his family have connections to fire departments in the Utica and Rome area.

Dale Morrow, the city’s purchasing manager, was told by Shannon that the truck would be “donated.”

Shannon said he was intrigued by the rescue truck’s history, especially regarding the remnants of a decal that can still be seen on the apparatus. He later discovered that the decal represented the dedication of the truck to WFD Chaplain Monsignor McCarthy, who died in 2018 at the age of 99.

Under the WFD, the rescue vehicle clocked 12,733 hours of usage and drove 84,977 miles on city streets. It went on about 2,600 calls per year from 2018-2020.

State budget proposals include $125 million to boost wildfire response

Both the Senate and House budget proposals includes $125 million to boost wildfire response in the state. “I am very pleased both the House and Senate have put forward transformative investments to reduce wildfire risk and protect our communities,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz. “Their budgets — which make historic investments to fight and prevent catastrophic fires — are a credit to the coalition of firefighters, public health advocates, environmentalists, forest products businesses, and others who have championed the need for urgent action to prevent the Evergreen State from turning charcoal black.

Suamico (WI) Fire Department Cuts Ribbon on New $6 Million Fire Station

According to a report from WBAY, the Suamico (WI) Fire Department (SFD) has cut the ribbon on its new $6 million fire station, a plan that had taken years to complete.

The SFD hosted the private opening on Sunday afternoon, cutting the ribbon at their new $6 million dollar building, which took 10 months to complete.

Suamico Administrator Alex Kaker said that SFD’s previous station, Fire Station 1, was about 60 years old and just 5,000 square feet, which was too small to accommodate the larger fire trucks and increased firefighting technology.

The new station is now 23,000 square feet and features hands-free technology, an air vac garage, and a decontamination zone. SFD Chief Joe Bertler says that the decon hallway aids in a sanitizing process that will decrease firefighters’ risk of getting cancer. He added that firefighters will put their gear in the gear washer and dryer, go into the decontamination and steam showers, wash their personal clothes, and change into an extra set of clothes they brought.

Officials said there are still a few small details to iron out, but they will host a public open house later in the summer after most people have been vaccinated from COVID-19.
