Man pleads guilty to stealing rifle, setting Seattle Police Department cruiser ablaze during May riots

A man has pleaded guilty to stealing an AR-15 rifle from a Seattle Police cruiser before helping set it on fire during the riots in Downtown Seattle in May, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday. Tyre Means Jr. was captured on video on May 30 lighting a paper towel and setting in the back seat of a damaged patrol car parked in the 1600 block of 6th Avenue while others in the crowd poured lighter fluid and other accelerants on the flames, eventually setting the patrol car ablaze, according to federal prosecutors.

Proposed Paradise (CA) Fire Station to be Built on Church of Christ Property

According to a report from Action News Now, the town council of Paradise, California, is expected to finalize the purchase of the Church of Christ Paradise property at 1181 Pearson Road, which will be used to build a new fire station.

The nearly five-acre property has been empty for several months. The Council approved the purchase on November 2, 2020, at a cost of about $200,000.

John Gaddie, Butte County Cal Fire Public Information Officer, said Paradise is in need of a new fire station to replace its Station 82. Gaddie said he estimates that Station 82, located on South Libby and Pearson Roads, is at least 50 years old. That fire station currently staffs three firefighters 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

No details have yet been made public about construction. The town plans to use money from its general fund to purchase the plot of land.

Oak Grove Heights (AR) Divided Over Plans for New Fire Station

According to a report from KAIT8, the plans and funding for a new fire station continue to divide residents and leaders in Oak Grove Heights.

In February, there was a disagreement between council members and Mayor Rudy Garner on how to fund the new station. Although everyone agreed that a new building was needed, they have not yet agreed on from where the money will come and which plans to approve.

In December 2020, a motion passed in a 5-1 vote to move 13 percent of the city’s sewer fund to the fire department to help pay for a new building. The motion would not increase tax for Oak Grove Heights residents, but would only move the 13 percent from one fund to another.

When the ordinance was voted on in January, it was defeated by a 3-3 tie, with Garner abstaining from the vote. Garner later said the city needs all available monies for future sewer projects and to pay the city’s existing debt on those sewer systems.

Several residents have voiced their opinions on the disagreement. The residents are also at odds on which plans the council should approve. However, both sides agree progress is needed at the next council meeting on March 15.

Currently, there are two plans for the new fire station, one proposed by council members approved by Fire Chief Justin Moore, and another that will proposed in the future by Garner. The plans proposed in December included a training room, kitchen and offices.
