Big Pine (CA) Fire Department Receives Its New HME Super 6 Truck

According to a report from Sierra Media Wave, the Big Pine (CA) Fire Department (BPFD) purchased a HME Super 6 at the end of September 2020. The vehicle has since been painted by Inyo-Mono Body Shop and then was outfitted in late December. The cost of the truck was $286,000.

Features include a single-stage pump capable of pumping 500 gallons per minute (gpm), a portable diesel pump capable of delivering 200 gpm, and 300-gallon water and 20-gallon foam tanks.

The truck also has two reels with 100 feet of one-inch hose. BPFD members have placed all their rescue tools on the truck for a faster response, and it can be driven by any BPFD firefighter rather than them needing a Class B driver.

The ne truck also has two 12-volt LED scene lights, a portable FoxFury scene light, hose packs, and wildland tools.

House Burns Down on Vashon's South End

A fire destroyed a small residence on Vashon in the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 3. Vashon Island Fire District responded to a call about a cabin fire at 4:38 a.m. and arrived to find a fully involved fire in progress. More than a dozen firefighters battled the blaze and protected a nearby house to the west of the property, not leaving the scene until 8 a.

California city moves to put fire department in charge of mental health response calls, not police

When someone has a mental health crisis in Oakland, chances are good in the near future that police officers won’t be showing up to try to calm them down. The City Council this week unanimously signaled that it wants the fire department to handle mental health crises and other non-crime calls by sending out paramedics and counselors.

Texas high school awarded $10K grant for invention designed to keep firefighters safe

VIDEO: Students at a Garland ISD high school have come up with an invention that is now getting national attention. Students at the Gilbreath-Reed Career and Technical Center designed a system to sanitize firefighters’ boots to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
