According to a report from Everything Lubbock, the Whiteface (TX) Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD) has purchased a new brush truck with aid from a cost share grant through the Texas A&M Forest Service’s Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program. The new truck replaces a 1994 model that had less response capability.

WVFD President/Training Captain Jay Kelley said they’ve responded to several calls including one for mutual aid to a house fire in Morton, and the truck as met and even exceeded expectations. Kelley also said that the truck’s improvements include a larger water tank, foam capability, and improved scene lighting.

On mutual-aid calls, WVFD’s response area doubles to 750-square-miles, making the addition of the truck even more valuable to the community. In 2020, they had 81 emergency calls, 12 rescues, and two house fires.

Texas A&M Forest Service Regional Fire Coordinator Paige Purvis said the truck increases the WVFD’s capability for a quick attack on the area’s grasslands, noting that the department is located in one of the driest parts of the Lubbock Region.

WVFD has been serving their community since 1965.

According to a report from PA Homepage, United Fire Company (UFC) in Montrose, Pennsylvania, received its new custom-built apparatus, Rescue 1, which was made possible through community fundraising.

Paul Johnson, UFC’s Second Assistant Chief, said the new truck offers more functionality and space, featuring new LED lights, greater cabin seating, and additional storage for the UFC’s equipment.

In addition, the LED lights will be more energy efficient on the battery, motor, and generator while sitting idle at a scene, an improvement over the incandescent lights on its current 1992 Rescue.

According to a report from Hastings Tribune, the Hastings (NE) Fire and Rescue (HFR) welcomed members of the community at Highland Park Fire Station as it unveiled Brush 1, a 2020 Dodge Ram with four-wheel drive that features a water pump, a 300-gallon water tank, a separate tank with 10 gallons of firefighting foam, and other wildland firefighting equipment. The truck is a lightweight vehicle with off-road capabilities for attacking grass fires and transporting crews to otherwise hard-to-reach locations.

The vehicle also carries advanced life support medical equipment for its dual role as a paramedic intercept vehicle to assist neighboring departments with critical patients being transported.

Brush 1 was purchased for $120,000 in November 2020 as part of Hastings’ 2020-21 budget and was delivered on February 5.

HFR apparatus committee member Firefighter Josiah Young led the housing ceremony. He said it took around a year to to research and order the best vehicle with the capabilities HFR needed. After buying the chassis, the group worked with a company to outfit the vehicle to suit HFR’s needs as a grass fire and intercept vehicle.

After completing the ceremonial “push-in,” with members of the public helping to push the vehicle into the station, the public went inside to tour the vehicle as well as check out other HFR vehicles.
