VIDEO: Fire breaks out at Massachusetts bakery

An investigation is underway after a fire destroyed a beloved bakery in New Bedford. Crews responding to Sunrise Bakery & Coffee Shop off Bolton Street around 10 p.m. Wednesday found flames and smoke shooting from the roof.

Firefighters were eventually able to get the fire under control, but it left behind heavy damage. “My niece, who’s 9 years old, saw what happened tonight and cried because one of our favorite places to go and get a sweet treat is gone,” said Chelsea Silva. “It’s going to be a big loss that the community feels.”

The fire was contained to the business and did not spread to any buildings nearby. The house behind it only sustained minor damage to the vinyl siding. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and it’s unclear if anyone was injured.

14 Basin firefighters complete fire academy training

PHOTOS: Fourteen firefighters from Quincy, Mattawa, Soap Lake, Ephrata and Royal Slope completed the Columbia River Fire Academy last week, according to an announcement from Grant County Fire District 3, which hosted the training at the George Fire Station.

“It’s a huge time commitment, not only for them but for their families who have to endure this for several months,” said Todd Hufman, Assistant Chief of Operations and Training for Grant County Fire District 3.

The course was every Monday and Thursday evening, plus several all-day Saturday sessions starting in September. The curriculum came from the International Fire Service Training Association’s Firefighter 1 course. Participants came from a range of experience levels, Hufman said.

Richland Fire and EMS becomes first in Eastern Washington to carry blood on ambulances

Richland Fire and Emergency Services is launching its “Blood on Board” program, becoming the first fire and EMS agency in Eastern Washington to carry blood on vehicles for pre-hospital, life-saving transfusions to critically injured patients.

The groundbreaking program equips paramedics with blood supplies stored in military-grade coolers, providing immediate treatment for trauma patients in the crucial minutes before they reach the hospital. Battalion Chief Andy Sabin said the initiative positions Richland as a regional leader in emergency medical care.

“Our goal with all of this is being good stewards of wanting to give blood supply back into the system, if we’re going to be taking blood out in the ambulance,” Sabin said. “We figured what better way to do that than to pair with the American Red Cross do a blood drive, pair with Kadlec, and work with the blood suppliers to be able to carry blood on the ambulance.”
