EMS is stretched so thin in Pennsylvania that in some places, ambulance calls go unanswered

The first responders’ biggest fear was realized one night in December when someone called 911 for help in rural Erie County and nobody came. The first dispatch went to Union City Fire Co. When Union City couldn’t crew its ambulance, the call rolled over to neighboring Waterford Volunteer Fire Department.

FDNY firefighter who pulled his brother's body from the rubble at Ground Zero dies of 9/11-related cancer

A retired firefighter who pulled his brother's body from the rubble at Ground Zero died Saturday of 9/11-related pancreatic cancer, officials said. Daniel Foley watched his firefighter brother respond to 9/11 and not come back, FDNY Lt. Mickey Conboy said. Foley promised his parents he wouldn't come home until he found his brother.

South Dakota: First team to a fire got $5 in 1880s Aberdeen

On North Main Street stands a historic little two-story brick building that once was Aberdeen Fire Station No. 2. It was built in 1930 to provide protection to the city’s north side, expanding coverage of the downtown Fire Station No. 1. It still looks much like it did back then, but No. 2 now is privately owned.

'I knew I was in deep trouble': Hiker crawls for 10+ hours to rescue after breaking leg on the Olympic Peninsula

An injured trail runner is sharing his miraculous story of survival after breaking part of his leg on a remote trail on the Olympic Peninsula. Joe Oldendorf says he crawled for more than 10 hours until rescuers found him early Saturday morning on the Duckabush Trail, which is west of Hood Canal. Oldendorf was released from Harborview Medical Center on Sunday evening.

Man critically injured after tree falls on Renton apartments

One man was critically injured after a tree fell on a six-unit apartment building in Renton on Sunday morning. Dispatchers received a call about 7:05 a.m. that there was a possible tree through a home in the 22200 block of 196 Ave. SE, according to Puget Sound Fire Captain Joe Root. An approximately 200-foot tree fell on top of the building, trapping one man who was sleeping on the couch at the time.
