The state is trying to avoid depleting the ranks of police and fire departments – and the prison – after the governor activated the R.I. National Guard last week.
Gov. Gina Raimondo said on Monday she has heard from city and town leaders concerned that activating the guard could make it hard for public safety officials to properly staff their police and fire departments, where personnel often serve in the armed services.

PHOTO: Tukwila firefighters were busy Tuesday morning putting out a fire that was burning a bridge.
Those firefighters were called to the South 129th Street Bridge around 5 a.m., according to Tukwila Fire officials. Photos from the scene showed extensive flames burning underneath the structure when crews arrived.

VIDEO: More than a dozen inmates busted through a fire door and jumped a tall fence to make a daring escape from Yakima County Jail Monday evening, and several of them are still on the loose.
It was around 7 p.m. when the 14 inmates in an annex grabbed a table and broke open an exterior fire door, according the Yakima Police Department.

The Skamania County Sheriff's Office and other emergency personnel helped rescue a woman who fell over Spirit Falls, near Cook, Washington, Monday evening.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies, search and rescue crews, and medics responded to Spirit Falls on the White Salmon River after receiving a call that a woman had gone over the falls shortly after 5:30 p.

PHOTO: Quilcene Fire Rescue and resources from five other departments extinguished a residential fire Monday afternoon on Center Road near the intersection with East Columbia Street.
No injuries were reported.
Quilcene Fire Chief Tim McKern said crews responded at about 3 p.m. along with resources from East Jefferson Fire-Rescue, Brinnon Fire Rescue, Mason County Fire, Discovery Bay Fire Rescue and Port Ludlow Fire Rescue.
