When the roster of Niagara Falls firefighters is posted later today, for the first time in 50 years there won’t be a Fontanella on the list.
The half century run of the Fontanella family as Cataract City blazebusters came to an end on Wednesday with the retirement of Battalion Chief Mark Fontanella.

The City of Kennewick announced Thursday that Chad Michael will be the new Fire Chief of the Kennewick Fire Department.
Sourced through Western Fire Chiefs Association's Confidential Recruiting service, Michael will officially be sworn in on March 17 at the council meeting starting at 6:30 p.m.
A community reception is also being planned for March with a day and time to be announced.

A Spokane homeowner and a first responder were sent to the hospital Tuesday night after inhaling chemicals that were being used to clear out a drain.
Spokane firefighters were called to the 2600 block of North Atlantic Street around 8:45 p.m. One person called 911 after experiencing symptoms related to drain clearing products that were used to clear a clogged sink.

PHOTO: An abandoned building in Yakima caught fire Jan. 29 at 2:15 according to the City of Yakima Firefighters Association.
The building, located on the 100 block of N 10th Street, had heavy smoke coming from previously cut vent holes in the roof.
One person was found in the structure and removed.

Washington led the nation in 2012 when it became one of the first two states to legalize adult use of recreational marijuana.
When it comes to ensuring that adults who use legal pot can still find employment, however, the state is not the trailblazer it once was.
That could soon change. A proposal in the Legislature would update Washington law to ensure employers can’t reject job applicants simply because they test positive for marijuana in a pre-employment drug screening.
