A Yakima ambulance company is getting a national award one day after Yakima's Fire Chief criticizes the system and says changes need to be made. Fire Chief Aaron Markham said yesterday that people are waiting too long for ambulances to arrive, meaning they are losing crucial time. "We really don't have a system in place that establishes performance measures for the ambulance companies that respond to our area," Markham says.

The Merriweather Fire Station No. 14 has officially opened in Columbia, reports patch.com

The new 6,800-square-foot fire station is a full service station offering both fire and EMT assistance.

Construction began on the fire station in March 2019 and a dedication ceremony was held recently. The Merriweather Fire Station has two apparatus bays, a kitchen, dining room, general use rooms, a command center that doubles as a community center for special public events and administrative offices.

 

The groundbreaking ceremony for the $6 million project that will replace a fire station will be held soon, reports MLive.

A 2015 evaluation found that it would be more cost-effective to build a new building rather than renovate the current station, built in 1974.

Fire station No.2 will continue to serve the most populated region of Portage.

The top priority was adding “clean” rooms for firefighters to remove used equipment as soon as they get off the truck. Clean rooms will prevent cross-contamination and the spread of carcinogens.
