Six firefighters from the Yakima City Fire Department participated in the Portland Stairclimb Challenge this weekend to raise funds to fight against cystic fibrosis. Firefighters from across the northwest raced up 40 floors and 800 steps of the U.S. Bancorp Tower in full gear.
This year, the Yakima firefighters raised just over $1,000 that will go toward research to find a cure for cystic fibrosis, care and education programs.

Bob Burdett was nearing the end of his bicycle ride just before noon on Sept. 15 to meet his son, Gabe Burdett, for an afternoon of mountain biking at Riverside State Park.
The 62-year-old had already pedaled several miles from his South Hill home along High Drive Parkway, by High Bridge Park and across sections of the Centennial Trail.

VIDEO: Two businesses sustained heavy damage after a fire broke out Tuesday night at a shopping center in Puyallup.
It happened at Valley Plaza shopping center in the area of E. Main Avenue and 15th Street SE.
There are at least eight businesses in the shopping center, but the fire was contained to two businesses -- a shoe repair shop and a dry cleaner -- thanks to quick thinking by responding firefighters.

Firefighters are hoping a detailed proposal will convince council to let them serve as the city's primary EMS provider.
Chief Justin Edwards says their more than 30-page EMS proposal covers two different options: one for Uhrichsville only and the other for the Twin Cities and surrounding townships.

Federal officials are recommending stronger nationwide requirements for natural gas systems following last September’s natural gas explosions and fires in Massachusetts.
The National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates major pipeline accidents, said Tuesday every state should require all natural gas infrastructure projects to be reviewed and approved by a licensed professional engineer.
