VIDEO: There now is a network of cameras in high fire risk areas up and down the state helping guide firefighting efforts. It started with just three cameras in Tahoe and grew exponentially. Now, the fairly new technology is already proving to be a critical tool when it comes to pinpointing the location of a fire.

Pennsylvania city looks to hire more female and minority firefighters

City officials hope a consultant can help attract a more diverse pool of job applicants to the Pittsburgh Fire Bureau. City Council on Tuesday introduced a resolution that would authorize the hiring of the National Testing Network at a maximum cost of $49,875 for a study of fire bureau hiring practices and the inability to attract more women and minorities.

Illinois first responders get training to assist those with autism

About 70 local police officers, firefighters, paramedics, high school and mall security and emergency dispatchers from North Riverside, Brookfield, Riverside and Brookfield Zoo got a crash course in handling incidents involving people on the autism spectrum last week during special training sessions at the North Riverside Village Commons.

Pasco third-graders learn fire evacuation plans

Dozens of third-graders spent Tuesday morning learning how to safely get out of a home. The EDITH house (Exit Drills in the Home), was brought to Robinson Elementary School. The mobile house is designed to simulate a home filling up with smoke and alarms going off. Kids split up into two groups. Pasco firefighter Ben Shearer taught one group about crouching down below the smoke if a fire starts.

Cowlitz Fire District 6 gets funding for Mt. St. Helens area response

The Cowlitz County commissioners Tuesday awarded federal funding to Cowlitz Fire District 6 to provide emergency services to the Mount St. Helens area. The fire district, which serves Castle Rock and the northern part of the county, received funding from the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act.
