Two buildings, two cars destroyed by brush fire near Diamond Lake

A fire near Diamond Lake burned two buildings and two cars Sunday afternoon. South Pend Oreille Fire first responded to a structure fire that had spread to the surrounding brush around 2:40 p.m. When the flames began spreading quickly, 50 firefighters from Pend Orielle Fire District 4, Spokane County Fire District 4, and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources were sent to help.

Brush fire burns five acres near Spokane Valley park

Fire crews responded to a brush fire in Spokane Valley Sunday afternoon. Smoke could be seen from I-90 as the fire burned near Discover Place and Mirabeau Park just after 3:00 p.m. The fire burned five acres before it was contained. Crews said heavy winds made it a challenging fire fight. Fourteen engines and command vehicles were used on the ground and two fire boss planes were used to make water drops from above, refilling from Newman Lake.

5,000-acre wildfire burning in Grant County caused by motorcycle crash

VIDEO: A motorcycle crash triggered a wildfire near Mattawa that has grown to over 5,000 acres and is threatening a couple dozen homes, sheriff's officials said. The blaze, named the "Powerline Fire", began around 12:40 p.m. Sunday in the Saddle Mountains after the crash ignited grass and the fire spread in gusty winds.

Agencies in Idaho boost efforts to stop wildland firefighter suicides

Shane Del Grosso spent some 30 summers crossing smoke-shrouded mountains and forests to fight increasingly devastating wildfires in the U.S. West. Toward the end, his skills and experience propelled him to lead a federal multi-agency team that responded to large-scale national disasters. On some days he directed a thousand firefighters and helped coordinate aircraft attacks on massive blazes.

New Jersey cops and firefighters are asking for much bigger raises

After West Windsor’s police contract expired at the end of last year and negotiations with the township stalled, the union turned to an arbitrator to break the impasse. The local union’s demands? Four percent annual pay hikes for sergeants and for patrolmen at the top of the scale and 2 percent annual wage increases for everyone else, in addition to the standard wage increases officers receive for additional years of service.
