Inside SoundOff Signal Lighting

SoundOff Signal was founded in 1992 in Hudsonville, Michigan and has grown from a modest operation to a firm employing nearly 500 people, with expansive manufacturing facilities in the U.S. Initially focused on law enforcement and amber warning markets, the company’s portfolio has broadened significantly. Over the past few years, SoundOff Signal has made a strategic push into the fire and EMS sectors, as well as performance and off-road vehicle markets.

Silicone Lighting

Among the innovations highlighted in the podcast, SoundOff Signal’s silicone lighting technology stands out as a groundbreaking development Unlike traditional polycarbonate lenses, which often suffer from fading and damage within months of deployment, SoundOff’s silicone lenses are engineered to withstand extreme heat, cold, humidity, and physical abuse—conditions routinely encountered by fire trucks. A key feature is the UV-protected, sealed lens design that drastically reduces moisture intrusion and damage common in conventional lighting. This durability translates into fewer replacements and maintenance demands, a critical factor for departments operating within stringent budgets. The optics integrated into the silicone material also improve light dispersion, providing better visibility to surrounding motorists and enhancing scene safety.

Potential Tariff Impacts Affect Town’s Fire Apparatus Replacement Budget

According to an MV Times report, the Tisbury (MA) Fire Department has locked in on a $1.1 million budget for a new fire apparatus in anticipation of federal import taxes leading to price increases. According to Chief Patrick Rolston, the department has found a basic fire truck that matches the units in use now by the department for just over $1 million, but that tariffs are expected to raise the costs. The purchase still needs to go before town voters. According to the report, the fire department’s stabilization fund has the funding for the vehicle, but it must be approved by voters first, which can be done during a fall special town meeting. Township Administrator Joseph LaCivita has recommended asking vendors to queue the town as a buyer to lock in at the $1.1 million.

Rolston states that the new rig may look different than fire trucks currently in use by the department depending on its final design, but it is looking to spec the same pump type used throughout the department to ensure familiarity. He says the department is looking to spec a truck that is shorter than 30 feet long to help navigate the town’s narrow roads.

Multiple Departments Prepping New Air/Light Fire Apparatus for Service

In a press release from the State of Rhode Island (RI) General Assembly, a custom-made air/light fire truck will soon support multiple communities in Northern RI. At least 12 fire departments and districts will have access to the new unit, serving more than 460,000 Rhode Islanders.

A $586,363 federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) award delivered by U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse made this possible, the press release shared. In addition, a $50,000 legislative grant from the Rhode Island House of Representatives was dedicated to the project, delivered by Representative Stephen M. Casey, a Woonsocket firefighter.

The unit is able to refill self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) cylinders, provide enhanced portable lighting, as well as a rehab area to keep firefighters cool in the summer and warm in the winter, a news article by The Breeze states. In addition, the truck has two extendable awnings and storage space.

Captain Matthew Dubois and Captain Brendon Adams of Woonsocket, Lieutenant Daniel Petrin of Central Falls, and Lieutenant Jason Dupont of Limerock shared to The Breeze  that the process of designing this apparatus took nearly three years. Although there are air/light units in RI, Limerock Chief Timothy Walsh noted that there are no other trucks in the state with this level of performance and practicality.

Dupont stated in a news article that the truck is getting some finishing touches, but should be available for service in early July.
