Investigator: Spokane Valley fire started at homeless camp

A Spokane Valley fire started at a homeless camp Sunday evening, according to fire investigators. People reported seeing smoke and flames near the Trent and Hough intersection sometime after 7 p.m. Firefighters quickly got the scene under control and prevented anyone from getting injured. The investigator on scene told KXLY4 that he believes the fire started at a homeless camp that is known to be in that area, near the railroad tracks.

A college freshman was among the four people killed when a construction crane fell from a building and crashed onto one of Seattle’s busiest streets, the university said Sunday. Sarah Wong, who intended to major in nursing, was in a car when the crane fell from a building under construction on Google’s new Seattle campus onto Mercer Street Saturday afternoon, according to a statement released by Seattle Pacific University.

Clean up underway after 4 killed in construction crane collapses in Seattle

VIDEOS: Crews began clearing away the wreckage overnight following a deadly crane collapse in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle. By daylight Sunday morning, the cars and most of the crane were cleared from the roadway. The view from Air 4 showed large chunks gouged out of the street. Four people were killed when the crane fell from atop a building under construction on the new Google Seattle campus.

Lewis County to Conduct Local Outreach Before Exploring 911 Regionalization

As Lewis County explores the possibility of merging with Thurston County’s 911 service, it’s planning to hear from local cities and fire districts before it undertakes any formal studies or puts together a plan. “The (county) commissioners want to ensure that there is a conduit for information, questions, concerns to be funneled back to the process, once and if they get into it,” said county Manager Erik Martin.

WA public lands commissioner: ‘I’ll be disappointed’ if new wildfire funding source not in budget deal

As a budget agreement falls into place in Olympia, the State Department of Natural Resources hopes a final deal includes new funding to help fight and prevent wildfires for years to come. The DNR asked lawmakers to approve a plan that would create a designated fund for wildfires, using revenue from a slight tax increase on property and casualty insurance premiums.
