House fire displaces five people, three treated for smoke inhalation, Yakima firefighters say

A fire at a home in the 600 block of Cornell Avenue displaced five people Tuesday morning, Yakima firefighters said. Firefighters were called around 7:30 a.m. Two adults and two children from the downstairs unit and an adult living upstairs were able to get out, along with four dogs, according to a fire department news release.

Sprinkler head prevents Cheney apartment fire from spreading

A fire in a Cheney apartment building prompted an evacuation, but was contained to a single apartment Monday night thanks to a sprinkler head. Monday around 8:23 p.m., Cheney firefighters responded to the fire at the Eagle Point Apartments, discovering upon arrival that a single automatic fire sprinkler head in a kitchen had activated.

Thurston County emergency leaders testify before Senate committee on need for sales tax increase.

Leaders at Thurston County’s 911 dispatch center say the radio system that emergency responders use to talk to dispatchers and each other is outdated and they are asking state lawmakers for the ability to collect more sales tax to pay for a $30 million upgrade. TCOMM 911 handles emergency calls and dispatches first responders in Thurston County with the exception of Washington State Patrol.
