In their shoes: Seeing the homeless community through a Spokane firefighter's eyes

VIDEO: It's probably not a question you have to ask yourself. Where are you staying tonight? But for many of the homeless in our community, finding a place is a battle everyday. But it's not a battle they fight alone. The city's firefighters do so much more than put out flames. All throughout our special report, "In Their Shoes," KXLY4 has been trying to give you a picture of a problem and a possible solution.

Spokane Fire Department responds to Lewis and Clark science class for unsecured substance

The Spokane Fire Department responded to Lewis and Clark High School on Thursday after teachers discovered a hazardous substance, which is used in science demonstrations, had not been properly secured. In a recorded message to parents, Principal Marybeth Smith said the substance, which was not identified, was found secured behind a locked cabinet, but not in its protective sleeve.

Fulton (AL) Builds New Fire Station

 
 

Mayor Norris worked with the city to make sure that the fire station was a top priority.

The new fire station is on a hill, safe from the raging creek that flooded it’s original location.Fire chief Danny Bedwell was emotional when we spoke with him back in April.

Gas Thief Targets Spokane Valley (WA) Fire Station

 
 

"We took off on a couple medical calls last night, when we came home we noticed some snow tracks running across the ramp," said Captain George Hedebeck. "We came out and took a look and first think I looked for was my car was locked, all my windows were intact." 

Then, Hedebeck noticed a red rubber hose hanging out of his fuel door. The gas siphoning thief took off in a hurry. Hedebeck only lost a few gallons worth of gas -- he's glad there wasn't any other damage.

"If he would have drilled through the tank, that would have been an incredible problem."
