Mayor implements racial sensitivity plan in Michigan fire department

VIDEO: On Wednesday, the Lansing Mayor released a statement saying that a new racial diversity and sensitivity would go into place in the City of Lansing Government. "As Mayor of the City of Lansing, I am committed to continuing to work toward racial equity," Andy Schor said. "We must all work together to ensure that no one is left behind or treated differently based upon race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other distinguishing characteristics.

Florida fire officials blame budget issues for delayed response to fatal chainsaw accident

Immokalee Fire Control District officials say budget shortfalls are to blame for a delay in getting to a man who died because of injuries suffered from a chainsaw accident Saturday. It took only a few minutes for crews from the Immokalee fire district to arrive after Esteban Cristobal-Antonio, 36, injured himself while cutting branches about 30 feet up in a tree he had climbed at 331 N.

Connecticut fire department replenishes its ranks, works to build experience

VIDEO: The Hartford Fire Department continues to rebuild. It was short 100 firefighters after it lost more than that in 2016. Now, nearly 40 percent of the city's firefighters are new. "Five years ago, 19.5 [years] of experience was the average time for having a firefighter in the Hartford fire department," said Chief Reginald Freeman, Hartford Fire Department.

New Jersey firefighter union sues the state

The union representing the city’s firefighters has filed a complaint against the city and state over unfair promoting practices, compensation and unpaid raises. International Association of Fire Fighters Local 198 filed the complaint Monday in state Superior Court alleging the city and the state Department of Community Affairs and Division of Local Government Services have failed to “act in good faith” when promoting firefighters to captains and failed to pay contractually mandated step raises.

Spokane firefighters help clear ice, snow for South Hill woman confined to wheelchair

It's been a rough winter in the Inland Northwest, and it's been even more difficult on Jina Luther. Confined to a wheelchair, she's been unable to leave her apartment on the South Hill for the last month. "I could not get out," Luther said. "I was trapped." The thick ice created by all the snow and freezing temperatures formed a barrier outside her front door, keeping her from being able to reach her paratransit van.
