A Tacoma firefighter who is president of the firefighters’ union Local 31 was suspended for 30 days without pay after an investigation found he regularly used derogatory terms to describe women and those who disagreed with him.
Ryan Mudie served the suspension from Oct. 29 to Nov. 20.
“Your language and behavior are degrading and insulting and absolutely cannot be tolerated,” Chief James Duggan wrote in a Sept.

Rick Chase met Andrew Vathis 25 years ago while they were working at Albertsons on the South Hill.
Immediately, Chase said, he knew Vathis was a people-person because he would talk to everybody and treat them as a friend.
“To him, working at the store was about the people,” Chase said.
It’s that sense of friendship that drew more than 1,000 people to Ferris High School on Saturday for Vathis’ memorial.

If you had plans to shop for shoes at Payless in Lacey, you’ll have to temporarily put those plans on hold.
Why? A car backed into the building at 700 Sleater-Kinney Road SE on Thursday, Lacey Fire District 3 Battalion Chief Steve Crimmins said Sunday.
The incident was reported about 1:15 p.m. An employee in the store was not hurt, and the driver was treated and released at the scene.
