Follow Up: Businesses react after man is charged in string of Seattle area arsons

VIDEO: Months after a series of fires damaged or destroyed five businesses in Seattle over a four-week period, police now have a suspect. Now business owners in the Queen Anne, Ballard, and Fremont neighborhoods are relieved. Police believe Matthew Hooper, 38, is responsible for the five arsons last fall, including a massive fire at the Gascoigne Lumber Co.

Catoosa County (GA) to Purchase Fire Equipment

 
 

“Back in Dec., we requested to go out to bid for 50 new breathing apparatuses,” Camp said. “This would be purchased out of the 2014 SPLOST funds, which currently has a balance of $1.2 million.  

Camp says the need for the new gear stems several air tanks getting up there in age.  

“Our department currently has 83 air packs, and 33 of those are around the 2008 or 2009 year model,” Camp said. “It’s the other 50 that we need to replace.”

Essex (MA) Focusing on Combined Police, Fire Station

 
 

The town has agreed to purchase the private lot for $785,000, according to Selectman Andrew Spinney. Both parties signed the purchase and sale agreement on Monday, and he said the sale will be close by June 1 at the latest.  

With the John Wise Avenue lot extension in tow, Johnson Roberts Associates Inc., the design firm for the public station project, said a two-story, two-department facility is feasible on the lot. Town Building Committee members at their Wednesday meeting voted in favor of pursuing this option to present to Town Meeting in May.

The Plains (VA) Fire Apparatus Retired

Five of the members pooled resources and bought it back in late 2017 and, after considering its value as a showpiece for recruiting, parades and memorials, the department leadership agreed to repay those members and buy it back for good. The Marshall and Warrenton fire companies have retired trucks in their fleets, and The Plains volunteers wanted one, too. New fire trucks have hefty price tags. A replacement tanker will cost $750,000. Buried somewhere in the archives, the 1976 C-900’s original price probably ran in the range of $50,000. These are significant investments, which is why keeping them in good condition is so important.
